Information for exchange students

Only students from our partner schools may apply for the exchange program at Bifröst University. You must always start the application procedure by contacting the International Office at your home university.  Once your International Office has nominated you to study at Bifröst, please follow these instructions:

By clicking on the following links, download the Application form and the ECTS learning agreement.

Fill out the application form. Either by hand or on the computer is fine. Don't forget to include the picture.

Fill out the ECTS learning agreement. It should list the courses you plan to take, and it should be signed by the international coordinator at your home institution. If the course list for the term you are coming to Bifröst is not posted yet, refer to the list from the previous year, or just write "Exchange Program -- 30 ECTS credits."  You can revise the learning agreement later.

Go to your home university and ask for a copy of your transcript (your academic record).

Make a copy of the photo page of your passport.  If you have a driver's license, please make a copy of it (both sides for European standard licenses). Note: it is not essential that you send copies of your passport and driver's license with your application, but if you do, it will save time later.

Send the application form, the ECTS learning agreement, your transcript, and (if possible) the photocopies of your passport and driver's license to us.

In many cases, your home university will send the application on your behalf.

Applications must reach us by:
15 March for summer term
15 April for autumn term
15 October for spring term

Early applications are strongly encouraged. Applicants from outside the EU/EEA (which means the USA, Canada, Russia, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and other countries) must apply earlier in order to leave time to apply for an Icelandic student residence permit. Processing a residence permit can take up to three months.

We know that as a prospective exchange student you will have loads of questions concerning the course offerings, travel, accommodation and so on. We ask you to kindly start by reading through our list of frequently asked questions, and then to look at the course lists, practical information. Nonetheless we are of course available to answer any further questions you might have about your stay with us, so please do not hesitate to send us email.

Bifröst University places special emphasis on international awareness and on partnerships with universities around the world. Active student and teacher exchange lends Bifröst an international feeling which is important part of the student’s experience.

Each semester a group of foreign exchange students comes to Bifröst. We make sure the exchange students feel welcome at Bifröst by having an orientation day where they are introduced to all the facilities and study system. Exchange students will also have their personal buddy. The buddy system helps the exchange students to intergrade into the environment and adapt easily. Bifröst arranges a car for the exchange students which is free of charge (except for gas).

Bifröst takes part in Erasmus exchange programme between Europe universities, and Bifröst has many bilateral agreements with selected universities in North and South America and Asia. Bifröst is also a member of the University of the Arctic and takes part part in UArctic's north2north student exchange programme.
